I’ve mentioned in other posts that I don’t have a lot of time for hate-groups and another one has reared its ugly head. This one is called the Capitol Resource Institute and its target is the children in California schools. To be more accurate they are targeting the FAIR Education Act, SB 48, where the goal of this act is to teach students about gay, lesbian and transgender people in history. The purpose is as follows:
The FAIR Education Act would ensure that LGBT people are included in instructional materials, which studies have shown is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying. The FAIR Education Act would require that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans are included and recognized for their important historical contributions to the economic, political, and social development of California.
The Southern Poverty Law Center doesn’t yet list the Capitol Resource Institute as a hate group but it should. To deny any group its place in history is just plain mean and that is the kind of thing that hate groups do. The Capitol Resource Institute has received approval to circulate petitions for a referendum on the June 2012 ballot to overturn SB 45. They need just over five hundred thousand of these signatures and they have to do it before mid-October.
That’s the bad news. The good news is they will not be doing so unopposed. The Courage Campaign, along with the California Federation of Teachers, California Nurses Association, Equality California, the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, and the UC Academic Student Employees Union are running a “Decline to Sign” campaign to educate the public and to discourage people from signing these petitions.
I’ve said it before that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and this is true of situations like this. We, and our allies, have to be just as loud and forceful about our side of the story when dealing with such groups. Needless to say this is another story I’ll be following and I’m hoping to cheer the success when it’s all said and done.
