It is puzzling me. The current crop of Republican hopefuls, vying for the opportunity of running for the position of President of the United States, have deliberately insured a significant portion of the population will never vote for them.

I have no idea what the percentage is but let’s start with the basics. The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB) reports about 7% of adult women and 8% of men identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual. Then let’s add all the friends and families to these people to the count. Then add all support groups and there are a lot of them.

Within the United States there are 80 groups (I’m not going to list them all – please check the Wikipedia link below) that support gays and lesbians. I really don’t know the numbers but I’m guessing there are a lot of people who are interested in LGBT rights. So being a political party and having this many people angry at you doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Then there are all the gay newspapers and magazines and they are certainly watching the Republican Party and watching them closely. There is a good sized list of national papers and a huge list of local ones.

The news for Republicans gets worse. For the first time Gallup’s tracking of the marriage equality issue shows the majority of Americans (53%) believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by the law as valid and with the same rights as traditional marriages. If you doubt Gallup then there is a Washington Post/ABC News poll where they found 50% of Americans overall approve of the New York same-sex marriage law. Apparently there is a list of other poll agencies that have approximately the same results.

I really don’t care if the Republicans ever get elected but I think they need to grow up and act like adults on this issue. I don’t know what Gary Johnson’s platform is on other subjects but he certainly seems like a grownup on this one judging from his statement on the pledge below:

While the Family Leader pledge covers just about every other so-called virtue they can think of, the one that is conspicuously missing is tolerance. In one concise document, they manage to condemn gays, single parents, single individuals, divorcees, Muslims, gays in the military, unmarried couples, women who choose to have abortions, and everyone else who doesn’t fit in a Norman Rockwell painting.

We need more grownups in politics.
