Focus on the Family is an organization that isn’t classed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center although it certainly is anti-gay and anti-transgender/transsexual. It’s my understanding that they haven’t made the hate list because they do not tell complete lies or misrepresent science when making their claims. Still, some of their opinions on social issues are incredible.

If you go to the Focus on the Family website you can find your way to their veiws on transgenderism.  There’s other views on social issues too but transgenderism or transsexuality are the ones I’m most interested in.  This and other posts will be about the page Talking Points (Trangenderism) because that’s the page with the most to say on this subject.  There seems to be a lot of points there but I’ll be lumping them into a few categories some of which I’ll coment on in the future.

Some of their claims seem to be based on the the biblical passage Genesis 1:26-27 which reads:

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

What is God’s image?  That’s the big question.  Some seem to think that we were made in the shape of God but that’s not possible is it? 1 John 4 makes it very clear that God is invisible.  It reads:

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

So if we’re made in God’s image and God is invisible what does this mean?  I called up one of our Chaplains and he explained that we’re not in his image as far as two hands, two feet etc.  It’s that we were made as holy as He is.  This was before the fall where Adam and Eve were kicked out of Eden and we were cursed with living an imperfect life.

With what I learned from the Chaplain I went looking further and found How is Man Created in God’s Image? It explains this subject much better. Some of what it tells me is:

  • God is a trinity and is one being as are we body and soul;
  • We are alive and serve a living God;
  • Our God is a loving God and we are beings with love for one and other;
  • God is a rational being and, as His creation, we are the only rational creatures on Earth;
  • God has free will and has given this to us.  This allows us to plot our own destiny;
  • God is morally aware as are we. We understand the differences between good and evil; and
  • We are the only creatures who are aware of God.

There is nothing in there that applies to those who are transgender/transsexual. If we’re all male or female then the need to be the other has nothing to do with God’s image.  If a woman who is born with male parts gets this corrected, the group Focus on the Family seem to believe that this in someway indicates she no longer of God’s likeness and is contrary to God’s will. Obviously this is not a view other Christians have.

The fact that the Bible says we’re made in God’s image is obviously open to interpretation.  I would find it incredible that they’d use such a flimsy foundation to argue about the evils of transgenderism but then the Bible doesn’t really say much on the subject.  It’s mostly their opinions that drive the statements they have made and, as such, these arguments appear ludicrous to me.  How about you?
